Busy Week!!!

Well folks I am taking a few minutes to update you all on what I have been doing this past week.

On Monday I visited the Jefferson County Federation of Republican Women and the Franciscan University College Republicans. Both organizations have very strong membership and their members are looking forward to helping the campaign.

Tuesday, I stopped at the Athens County GOP Executive meeting. As always the party had quite an aggressive agenda, I believe we are going see a real change for the better in Athens County this year. This was followed by a get-together with the Ohio University College Republicans. There were over 30 people at the first meeting, and I sat down with eight of the students at the Oak Room for discussion.

Thursday, Paula and I attended the Washington County Lincoln Day Dinner in Marietta. The food was amazing and the fellowship even better. Many familiar faces where their and I want to thank Lorena Feathers for all the work she is doing for us in the Washington County area.

Friday (last night), My Staff and I traveled to Athens County’s Annual Lincoln Day Dinner. Rob Portman was the main speaker and he did an excellent job of getting us all ready to fight for the Republican Party in 2010.

Tonight I will travel again down south. This time to Gallia County for their Lincoln Day Dinner. Josh Mandel will be speaking. I have met him several times, including when he was the key note speaker with me at the Youngstown TEA Party last year.

Till next time,

Dr. Allen

East Ohio GOP Chairman’s Association Dinner

Thursday Night I traveled with Paula and one of my staff to Undo’s Restaurant in St. Clairsville. We were invited by Kent Moore, on behalf of The East Ohio GOP Chairman’s Association. This Association helps unite those counties on the eastern edge of Ohio including: Mahoning, Columbiana, Jefferson, Belmont, Washington, Noble and Monroe. The dinner was a good chance to meet with all the county chairs and let them know about the progress which has been made by our campaign.

Meigs County Lincoln Day Dinner

Tuesday night I traveled three and a half hours south to Meigs County for their Annual Lincoln Day Dinner at Meigs High School. The event was a huge success for Chairman Warner and the county party; there were over 300 people in attendance. It was a great opportunity to see familiar faces and make some new friends.

Everyone was really happy to see such a great turnout. John Kasich was the keynote speaker, and gave quite an inspiring speech. He really has a great vision for Ohio and I believe he will restore Ohio to her former glory. He needs all our votes for governor.

While talking to people last night I was surprised how many brought up the power plant they lost due to the EPA and its power, which our current representative has ignored. When I was in Meigs County last year, many were excited at the prospect of having some new industry brought into their county. After listening to their frustrations regarding the lack of any progress on their behalf, I am more than ready to do everything I can to stop this nonsense.

It’s time we remove the power arbitrarily given to the EPA by this administration, not to mention other government agencies, and start making our hard-earned dollars work FOR us. As I have promised the good people in Meigs County and throughout the rest of Ohio’s 6th District, I will use common sense while in Washington and make sure that when I support legislation, I support legislation which is beneficial for our district and country.

Next week I will be in Washington, Athens, and Gallia Counties for their Lincoln Day Dinners. I look forward to sharing my ideas for common sense representation with the people of those counties.

Visiting Patrick AFB and Cape Kennedy

This morning I took off from the Youngstown Air Reserve Base with fellow members of the Youngstown Base Community Council on an informational trip. We will be traveling to Patrick AFB and Cape Kennedy in Florida. While down there I will be spending time learning about how important military spending is to the development of local communities. In addition to the growth and development military bases provide to communities like the Mahoning Valley.

I will also talk to people in order to better understand how the military contracting process works. My goal here is to learn all that I can about federal military contracting so that I can create legislation which will help ensure that taxpayer moneys allotted for military base development are spent on American businesses first.

I am still frustrated at the lack of work done by the congressional delegations from Ohio on behalf of the employees at Summitville Tile. I believe that if those people who claim to represent us are unable to find a solution to the problem than I will. I am not going to wait until after Election Day to make your voices heard on Capitol Hill. That is why I am working and have been working on creating solutions which will keep American dollars here in America.

I would love to come and learn about your business or visit your home and talk to your friends and family. If you would like to have me please email me at info@drallenforcongress.com and one of my staff will get back to you soon.

Thank you and God Bless

Donald Allen

Last week I was the guest of Matt Lewis and the Canfield Rotary for their Friday Luncheon on Feb 12th. The event was held at Fair Park in Canfield OH. The Rotary is a non-political organization whose main function is to improve the welfare of the community’s in which its members live. Their club rules prohibit political speeches or campaigning so my visit was an opportunity to talk about my book, “Tarawa – The Aftermath”. My comments on the book were well received and the club was incredibly welcoming to me and the members of my campaign. Thank you to President Sieglinde Warren and President Elect Dante Zambrini for their hospitality. I was particularly fond of their four guiding principles, which you can read here at their website: www.rotary.org.

If you would like me to visit your club and talk about my Commitment for a Better Tomorrow please let me know by emailing me at info@drallenforcongress.com or visit my website above.

Trip to Marietta Republican Women’s group

For bad weather we had a very good turnout of over 30 people at
Monday’s meeting of the Marietta Republican Women’s group.  After a
brief introduction we were able to discuss the upcoming primary
election with everyone, and received a lot of encouragement.  Many of
those present were also members of the Marietta 9-12 Group that we had met with a month ago.  They have been very supportive and
will soon be endorsing a candidate.

Our country must get back to basics.  Small businesses are the
economic cornerstones of every community, but government has made it exceedingly difficult to start a small business and work it to
success.  This has to change.  We need to clear the path for small
business start-up by eliminating the regulations and impediments that
hamstring young entrepreneurs.  We also need to help small farmers who want to pass on their farms to their children, and others who want to start farming.  Small farms and small businesses were the foundations
of our economy, and should still be.  Massive stores, massive farms,
and sending all our manufacturing to low-wage countries is NOT what is
best for Americans.  It smacks of collectivism and as we allow our government to grow ever larger, it will continue.  Time to turn this train around.

Thoughts on Our Current Economic Situation

Small businesses are the economic cornerstones of every community.
Our government, however, makes it very hard to start a new business
and work it to success. We need to remove the obstacles to start new
businesses and support those that already exist. It’s incredibly
easier to start a business in a foreign country than to start one here
at home.

President Obama has made some very interesting promises to look at
oil, nuclear, and even coal for energy sources. As with much of his
administration so far, we will now have to wait to see if he follows
words with actions. Making this country independent of foreign oil
would be a boon to our economy, and create millions of
petroleum-related jobs across the country. Drilling for our own oil,
wherever it exists, is still the best solution. Will he do it??? Our future
relies in us tapping into our own oil sources to keep us going into new
technologies become viable.

Brown makes Democrat Leadership Blue

Dissatisfaction with Government Priorities not specific to Massachusetts

Boardman, Ohio (1/20/10) – Donald Allen, a conservative Republican candidate for Ohio’s Sixth District, would like to extend his congratulations to the newly elected Senator from Massachusetts, Scott Brown.  Watching the results from his Boardman home, Dr. Allen realizes that the election yesterday has serious ramifications in Ohio and across the nation.

Allen, who has been meeting with voters throughout Ohio’s Sixth District since June of last year, has heard the same dissatisfaction expressed in Ohio that propelled Senator elect Scott Brown to victory in Massachusetts. With regards to Senator Brown’s victory, Allen declared, “This writing has been on the wall for awhile now. People are fed up with business as usual at their expense. That was my reason for running for President in 2008, not some grand illusion of getting into the White House, but to make the issues of today front and center on the national stage as best I could. That is also my reason for running for Congress this year, real leadership that tackles real issues that concern the people of this district.”

With job loss at an all-time high, attacks still being perpetrated against us and out of control spending that we can no longer afford, Don Allen believes that the growing resentment toward our government priorities is going to continue to rise.  “Our representatives need to take stock of the difference between party priorities and national priorities. Congressman Wilson has been sitting on the sidelines and not speaking up for the people of his district. It is time for the people of the Sixth District to have a voice in Congress that they can count on.” Allen said.

“We are on the cusp of a complete change in our government.” Allen declared. “It amazes me that the Democrats have lost touch so much, that they considered the Senate seat in Massachusetts theirs and not the peoples.  How hard is it to realize that the current policies coming out of Congress is not the will of the American people? People want to feel safe, they want a good job and they do not want their government dictating their every move. The people of the Sixth District are hardworking and motivated. They believe in an honest day’s pay for an honest day’s work. They want to make their contribution, not have it handed to them by a government bureaucrat. Between Cap and Trade and the current proposed ‘healthcare’ reform, people are not being given the chance to succeed, they are being penalized for it.”

Visiting the Portal of Hope (Powhatan #6)

January 13th was quite a big day. I had arranged a tour of one of Bob Murray’s underground coal mines, and we set aside the whole day for the event. Ryan Murray, who is in charge of their Powhatan #6 Mine, met Donovan, Alex, and myself at Bob Evans (our official campaign restaurant) in St. Clairsville and led us to the mine complex. There we met with Kevin Hughes, mine superintendent, who took us to their meeting room where we received basic safety instructions for the tour, familiarizing us with rescue gear and procedures. We then donned coveralls, waterproof steel-toed boots, and a miner’s belt that held our rescue breather and headlamp battery pack.

Miners Dave and Jeff escorted our group, which included Ohio State Representative candidate Bill Behrendt, to the elevator that would take us 30 stories down to the mine.

To say the experience was awesome is an understatement. We caught the longwall shearer at the left end of the 950-foot wall of the coal face and witnessed the way it ate away at the coal deposit like a 32-inch meat slicer that moved back and forth along the wall, depositing the loosened coal on a conveyer that carried it down the tunnel and out of the mine. Huge, powerful ceiling jacks held up the area above the shearer as it worked, and then advanced behind it when the shearer moved further into the coal face. As the jacks advanced, the ceiling behind them would collapse, filling the void created.

Next stop was to the continuous miner, a machine that ate into the coal face head-on, creating the tunnels that we traveled in. Shuttle loaders would take on that machine’s coal and run it to a conveyer head to move it out of the mine. We also saw the machine that drilled holes in the tunnel roof to insert steel rods or cables that compressed the layers of rock above to create a stressed, multi-layer (like plywood), strong ceiling that is very resistant to collapse.

Nearly everything moves on rails in the mine, and as tunnels are abandoned, the rails are taken up to be reused elsewhere. The conveyer system throughout the mine is another marvel of industrial revolution that replaced the coal car and mule system long ago. Even that is being improved with a new type of fire-resistant belting.

We finished our mine tour about 4 p.m., then we were met by Jonathan Murray, who took us to the transloading facility on the Ohio River. There we met Rob Visnik, harbor manager, who explained how the coal was moved from the mine to the end users. Much of the coal is carried on three 67-car trains from the mine head to a dumping pit, where another conveyer takes the coal out to a loader that fills barges on the river. Like the mine, the train’s work 24/7, loading and emptying four trainloads a day.

Each miner’s job is a valuable asset to the community. Murray Energy Corporation is the biggest employer in the county, with nearly 500 people in the mine alone. For every miner, there are eleven (11) ancillary jobs in the community that depend on him. Lose a miner, and you soon lose eleven other jobs in the area.

After this experience I have a greater appreciation for the mining industry and am prepared to be a champion for coal energy in the 6th district. This trip helped me understand that safety is priority number one for both the miners and the management.

The workers in the mine were all in very high spirits and seemed to not only enjoy their jobs but took great pride in them. This was something that Ryan and Kevin told me they try to do, instill a sense of responsibility and ownership in their employees. By doing this they help create an environment for successful working relationships between union workers and non-union management.

Athens County GOP Meeting

Tuesday afternoon Alex Mangie and I took a trip south again, this time to Athens Ohio for the Athens County Republican Executive Committee meeting.  There were over 28 people present, including members of the Ohio University College Republican Club.  I was invited to speak and then answer questions, and was very pleased with our reception. Chairman Couladis and the rest of his executive committee sound like they have allot of great work ahead of them.
